The symbolism of the Cross |
Symbolism:
THE CROSS:
The symbol of the cross had, since the beginning of the writing, multiple meanings, directional of arising and growth.
It would be presumptuous to treat here this subject already approached by the biggest humanists, spiritualists, theologians and specialists in any kinds of symbolism or sacred (holy) representations.
We shall call back humbly:
There are multiple "cruciform" representations which are widely previous, contemporary or posterior than that very known "Jesus Christ crucifixion cross" (let us remind that this cross was the same for all the condemnations by crucifixion and was not improvised for the occasion).
The term cross comes from the Latin word crux which has the meaning of "post", "gibbet", even "gallows".
The Greek term to indicate(appoint) the same object is stauros, issued of the Greek letter Tau (we remind you the magnificent name of this stone which creates relief crosses by crystalline spontaneous generation: the staurodyte).
From the beginning of this genesis about the symbolism of the Cross, we are going to see that every representation has an animistic or polytheistic origin taken back by the big religions, and the icons of which seems to belong to them.
More precisely, the cross is the symbol as well of the rise and the growth as the durty death, so much it is true that " what it is of higher there has its equivalent in what exists of more low ".
Symbol of power on earth when it is "closed on the top" like the Egyptian ansate cross (Ânkh Cross) or the tau cross said St Antoine's cross.
The cross Ânkh (" crux ansata " in Latin):
This symbol is the cross of Egyptian life, also called ansate cross or ankh cross.
In the Egyptian writing, it means "living" or " the life " and spells in our alphabet as this: ankh.
This cross is the symbol of the immortality and it is present in the hand of all Gods, but it is also a symbol of Pharaoh power. It can be also seen as a key opening the door of the kingdom of the deaths.
It inspires thus mainly the eternal life and the power, it is remarkable to note that we cannot speak about rise by this cross which, by its shape, evokes a grip in parre earth its foot and a circular movement in its summit which returns again towards the Earth. It is a magic symbol able to maintain the people in its materialism.
The ansate cross will be taken back by the Coptic church posterior to the ancient Egypt This cross is also one of the representations of the Venus' mirror, present in the Roman and Greek mythology (divination power).
The svatiska:
More known for its negative representation associated with the Nazis, it is nevertheless a millennium wheel of life, the first performances of which appearing to the paleolithic.
Wheel turning in right hand movement , direction of the life, of time, it means, in Indo-European: "check" or "happiness" (SVAZ or sou) - and "comment" or "sign" ( TIKA)...
The complete name "Swastika" comes from the fact that 4 "gamma" form its drawing symbol( Greek letter) geometrically.
It would seem whether it is above all an Indian symbol named Svatiska (good fortune-teller symbol).
It spreads in China, where it means " 10 000 ", it is a symbol of wealth and longevity, also in Japan, where it decorates the banners of the Samurais to protect them, and everywhere else in Asia.
Much later, the Europeans took this symbol. For Greek people, it symbolizes the sun; for Christians, we find it in the labyrinths of the tiled floors of cathedrals.
It is one of the lucky charms of the most universal.
The most ancient Svatiska was discovered to Samarra (in Turkey), it dates 8 000 years!! It is formed by 4 dancers whose hair indicate the direction of the round.
The dance suggests the happiness and the women, the life.
The Celtic Cross:
This cross does not appear in the Celtic original symbolism, it can serve as basis of representation of 4 name-days : solsticial (Samain and beltain) and and equinoxial (St John, winter and summer) with ten days of distance with our own calendars.
Four virtues, four strengths, four seasons, four directions.... The whole taken in the circle of the life (origin of quadriskels).
If there is no representation of the Celtic cross, that is with branches exceeding the circle, before the Christian Irish crosses, we find ancient symbols of close representation (a circle with a cross in 4 branches registered in this circle, that is branches stop in the circle; these symbols, called solar wheels, appear from the Neolithic (6000 BC).
In the Christian symbolism, the encircled cross is a representation of the signaculum domini, that is five wounds of the Crucifixion. By extension, it is also an image of the heart that is a stronger symbolism than that of the sun or the pole because the heart does not satisfying in receiving but looks the life in a constant exchange (the prayers of people and the graces of God).
The Southern Cross :
Above all the Southern Cross is a constellation, in the form of Cross, which use the natives of the southern hemisphere to find the south pole but also by those mediterranean whom saw in her only a part of the Centaur (Ancient Greek civilization).
Mimosa, Acrux and Becrux (not to confuse with the constellation of the Swan which indicates the cross of the North...)
Leaving from there the symbolization of this essential cross to the sailors, the travelers, the explorers by an African and Mediterranean cross, the central stone of which is an onyx was a logical consequence.
The southern cross, pendant shaped, became from immemorial time a protection for those who travel on the southern hemisphere and around the mediterranean sea and, by extension, everywhere.
CONSTRUCTION OF THE CROSS BY THE NUMBER :
Platon:
The solids of Platon are based on compositions in volume from crossed equal lines.
They are not figures of fate but indeed the symbolizations of the evolutionary part of the being:
- 3: the tetrahedron has 4 faces and 4 summits (volume of the triangle), it is the principle of a triangular base which cannot rise. Pyramids were graves and their principles of dissécation of the living matter is an example of the slowness of this base.
It is necessary to note that symbolically 4 (4 faces and 4 summits) represents the number of extremities of a cross.
We can then extrapolate the tetrahedron by suggesting that it represents the unimplemented principle of the cross but in state of future.
- 6: the cube has 6 faces and 8 summits which are interconnected to make it a cube (volume of the square).
The number is 6 which represents the balance and the permanent imbalance of the nature between the good and the evil.
The spiritual material (knowledge) is 8 as for him. Squares or faces which compose the cube have 4 sides being four the material such as the man conceives it in her embodiment (ownership).
By addition 6 and 8 form 14 the reduction of which gives 5 number of the man evolved (the man of Vitruve of Léonard de Vinci shows him supervised in a square of material, blocked by the circle of the spirit - 4+1=5).
If we consider the "bundle" of crosses the extremities of which would be the angles of a cube, are needed two crosses (4 extremities forming 4 angles of the cube) two crosses are only two "plans" of the esoteric representation of the number which vibrates at the time, the rhythm and the space.
- THE DODECAHEDRON:
To find this vibration on 3 evoked plans we thus have to in any logic go to the dodecahedron, the perfect figure (3X4 = 12) which we shall not detail because if you wish to make it you have all the necessary elements (smile).
The humility sometimes asks to stop and to leave to the reader the fields of the interpretation and the investigation free (smile again).
